Elementary Student and Hawaiian Boobs

Here is a story sent to me by Ellen Walker, an elementary teacher in Plano, TX and an avid reader of this blog.  This was an exchange between an elementary teacher, student and the student's father was there also:

Teacher: Alex, tell your father what you shared in school today.

Alex: I like Hawaii.

Teacher: Alex...

Alex: I like Hawaiian girls.

Teacher: And?

Alex: I like Hawaiian girls in grass skirts.

Teacher: Aaaand?

Alex: Fine. I like Hawaiian girls in grass skirts and their BOOBS!

High School Students' Pie Chart

Not all High School Students are like this, but sometimes it seems like they are...

U.S. Education - We Spend, Spend, Spend but see no results!

I know the stats are from 2009, but I don't think it has changed much.

What is wrong with U.S. Education?  This chart recently came out and it shows that the United States is second in the World when it comes to spending $$$ per student in public education.  Only Switzerland spends more $ per student than we do.

Then why is American Education fading fast.  Compared to other countries, our test scores have now plummetted out of the top 20.  We continue to fall.  Finland, a country with the highest test scores in the world and an educational system that is considered to be the best by many, spends about a third less than the United States on Education.  If we are spending so much, then why aren't we seeing results?  WE NEED ANSWERS! and we need to right the ship and fast!  Before you know it, we will have sunk down to the bottom half of all countries in the world when it comes to education.  What a shame!

So True!

Group Work in Schools

While this post pertains to business schools, it's just as true regarding high school:

Group work is largely an academic joke, a process where the weaker members of the group rely almost exclusively on the stronger, more conscientious students to carry them all to the grade they want. (Of course, the same “weak rely on the strong” dynamic prevails in real-world group work as well.) Group work serves lazy students and professors quite well — the low-performing students can relax while their peers complete the task, and the professors have fewer papers or projects to grade.
I remember very few group projects in high school, and only a couple of group projects in college (where I remember everyone pulling his/her own weight).
